This February Vacation week, our staff launched an out-of-this-world adventure with Astronaut Academy! From February 17th to February 21st, 65 aspiring young astronauts gathered to immerse themselves in the wonders of space exploration. With a variety of exciting and educational activities, the program captivated the imaginations of children, sparking curiosity and creativity while providing a memorable experience that was both fun and educational. This week took us on a fascinating journey through our solar system. Children learned about the planets in our galaxy, engaging in discussions about their characteristics and unique features. Throughout various activities, members were encouraged to design their own planets, aliens, and solar systems allowing them to explore the possibilities of life beyond Earth. This imaginative exercise not only taught them about space but also encouraged critical thinking and creativity. One of the highlights for many participants was the sweet and sticky activity of making aliens out of icing and candy. This hands-on project let the children express their creativity while indulging in some delicious fun. Each child crafted their own unique extraterrestrial, showcasing a diverse array of alien species that would make any science fiction enthusiast proud. This activity was a delightful blend of art and culinary fun, teaching the children about different textures and colors. Members were also tasked with designing their own space-ships out of colored paper, and older members created stunning illuminated planets using paint and marbles The Astronaut Academy also delved into the world of engineering and design. Our members learned about the principles of robotics and how to create circuits that could power a robot. This technical activity provided them with a basic understanding of how circuits work and an introduction to coding and robotics. Alongside making "space slime," these activities rounded off a week filled with learning, laughter, and discovery.
